Gender Based Violence

Family Impact of Radical Reductions in Gender Based Violence

Core 300, a US-based 501c3 men’s development organization, established a new work in Bungoma, Kenya through their 3-day Warriors conference for ministers in August, 2013. They continue to advise, coach, and financially support them today.

in 2014 Core 300 funded the registration through the 4 Kenyan native volunteer co-founders as Principle Based Leadership (PBL), a Kenyan non-profit Society focused on providing biblical Values-based Training. By 2024, PBL had graduated some 38,500 men and conducted 605 Wives’ Surveys in Kenya and Eastern Uganda. Later that year PBL became the first men’s and male youth development and empowerment NGO by the Kenyan NGO Board of Directors.

From 2019-2023 PBL’s native Kenyan leaders implemented the survey during graduation celebrations which occurred about 6 months after each course completion. The Survey included 5 simple Rater Statements that best described a virtuous, kind, and responsible, African husband, father, and provider.

In December, 2024, PBL became a Kenya-based NGO, becoming the only NGO of 12,300 other NGO organizations that is authorized to train, develop, and transform men and male Youth in Kenya

In the Fall of 2019, Core 300 created and implemented a Likert Scale Assessment with 5 rater statements named the Wives’ Survey. The purpose was to scientifically measure the impact of reported behavioral and values changes upon returning home by our graduates after completing their 3-day intensive training curricula.

Survey Group A: Wives whose husbands had graduated from the Warrior course only                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Sample Size: 605 Wives of graduates by random selection
Survey Dates: 2019-2023, and 2025 (ongoing)
We continue to increase our data sampling by anonymously surveying wives of more recent graduates as well as resurveying those who completed both the Warrior and the Priest curricula to measure the sustainability of transformational impact to Kenyan and Ugandan families

The results surprised even the most optimistic of us!”   –Rev. Rich Burton, former Core 300 Board Member and Survey Creator

Quality of Change (QOC)

Survey Group B: Wives whose husbands had graduated from both the Warrior and the Priest
Realized Cumulative Power of Wife-beating Change for Warrior only, and Warrior and Priest Combined
IMPACT upon marriages and families of Warrior Graduates   =  89% GBV reduction
IMPACT upon marriages and families of Warrior and Priest Graduates = 98% GBV reduction

IMPACT: Overall, the average quality of change ratios in GBV reduction between the “much improved” in Group A (Warrior) vs. the “much improved” in Group B (Warrior + Priest) were dramatically increased to 80.5% ‘much improved’ vs. 51% ‘much improved.’ underscoring our question of building cumulative male engagement–revealed by amplified positive behavioral changes in their husbands.
PROCESS: PBL Board Member’s and Coordinators wives began to administer and proctor confidential, PBL’s  live-translated (English-to-Swahili) surveys to 605 randomly selected wives of the 38,500 men who graduated from both the Warrior (A) and the Priest (Warrior+ Priest).
Comparative data strongly indicated the importance and necessity that both The Warrior and the Priest courses be completed to maximize both the delta of change, and the sustained quality of that change.

“It is clear from the data that these men were not only telling us that their lives had been transformed–but their wives–who rated the 5 rater statements–were just as liberal in their assessment. The validated and radical changes in-vivo showed the reduction–even the elimination of–Culture-driven toxic, irresponsible, and violent behaviors that pre-existed before our training. In addition to the practical elimination of GBV, other changes included increased work ethic (94%), nurturing engagement as co-parents with their children (96%), and the equal partnership of graduate men–in household chores while doubling down on their new passion to work hard to provide for their family.
